The Hardest Countries to Find on a Map (And Why They Are Hard)

· 5 min read

Which countries are hardest to find on a map?

The hardest countries to find on a map are the microstates: Vatican City, Monaco, San Marino, Liechtenstein, Malta, Singapore, Nauru and Tuvalu. At the scale of a world map, several of them are physically smaller than the dot of ink used to mark them.

Difficulty here has three separate causes, and they are worth separating because each one needs a different fix.

Why are microstates so hard to click?

Microstates are hard because on a 1000-pixel-wide world map they occupy less than one pixel. Vatican City covers 0.49 km², Monaco about 2.1 km², and Nauru 21 km². Rendered honestly at world scale, they simply are not there.

Country Area (km²) Roughly the size of
Vatican City 0.49 A large city park
Monaco 2.1 An airport
Nauru 21 A small town
San Marino 61 Manhattan
Liechtenstein 160 Washington DC
Malta 316 The Isle of Wight
Singapore 735 New York City

Most map quizzes handle this badly. They either leave the country out, or they render a shape so small that hitting it on a phone is luck rather than knowledge. The honest fix is to keep the true outline but give the country an invisible tap target sized for a fingertip, shrinking as you zoom in. Mappari gives every country under about seven pixels across exactly that.

Which countries get confused with each other?

Some countries are hard not because they are small but because they look or sound like a neighbour. These are the pairs that account for most wrong answers.

Confused pair What actually separates them
Slovakia / Slovenia Slovakia borders Poland and Ukraine; Slovenia touches the Adriatic
Niger / Nigeria Niger is landlocked and larger; Nigeria has the coast and the population
Austria / Australia One is Alpine and landlocked, the other is a continent
Iran / Iraq Iraq is smaller and sits west of Iran
Mauritania / Mauritius A large Saharan country and a small Indian Ocean island
Dominica / Dominican Republic A small Caribbean island and two-thirds of Hispaniola
Guinea / Guinea-Bissau / Equatorial Guinea Three separate countries, only the first two adjacent
Georgia / Armenia / Azerbaijan Georgia is northernmost, on the Black Sea

The Slovakia and Slovenia mix-up is not only a student problem. Their embassies in Washington reportedly met periodically for years to exchange misdirected mail.

Which large countries do people still miss?

Plenty of large countries get missed, and the reason is usually attention rather than size. Kazakhstan is the ninth largest country on earth and the largest landlocked one, yet it is frequently skipped because it sits in a part of the map people scan past. The same goes for the central African belt: Chad, Niger, Mali and the Central African Republic are all enormous and all routinely unplaced.

Countries also hide behind more famous neighbours. Nepal and Bhutan get lost against India. Lesotho and Eswatini sit inside or against South Africa. Belgium, the Netherlands and Luxembourg compress into a corner of western Europe that a world map renders in a few pixels.

Which region is hardest overall?

Oceania is the hardest region overall, because most of its countries are island groups scattered across a third of the planet's surface. Kiribati alone spreads across 33 atolls and more than 3.5 million km² of ocean, while its land area is about 811 km².

Africa is a close second, for a different reason: 54 countries, many with borders drawn as straight lines that give no shape cue to hang a memory on.

How do you actually get better at this?

Practise by region rather than by the whole world, and repeat the ones you miss. Splitting 196 countries into six sets of 12 to 54 turns an impossible task into six achievable ones, and revisiting only your wrong answers is far more efficient than replaying the full set.

Try the Europe locate quiz for the crowded-microstate problem, or Africa for the sheer-number problem. After a round, Mappari offers to replay only the countries you missed.

Put it into practice: try the world locate quiz or the flags quiz.
